Oregon's OnPoint Community Credit Union's Grand Openings in Vancouver Reap Harvest of Cash to Help Food Banks

June 19, 2008

Portland, OR --- The grand opening of three new OnPoint Community Credit Union branches in Vancouver, Wash., June 14, featured a "Supermarket Sweep" that netted free groceries for three area residents and a cash donation of $5,769 to help local food banks.

One customer at each of the three new branches won a chance to race through Safeway stores at Andresen, Burton and Salmon Creek for three minutes, filling their carts with as many grocery items as possible.

At the end of the sprint, the Salmon Creek branch winner walked away with $2,359 worth of groceries. Winners at the Burton and Andresen branches swept $2,147 and $1,263, respectively, into their carts.

The big winner, however, was Vancouver's NW Harvest South organization that collects food and cash donations for area food banks. OnPoint matched the total value of the Supermarket Sweep groceries and donated a check for $5,769 to help purchase much-needed food items.

Jean Socolofsky, director of the food bank for the past 25 years, said a single donation this large is uncommon and greatly appreciated. The value of cash donations is 50 percent higher than actual food donations, she said, because food banks often get discounts by buying in bulk.

"We are so pleased with OnPoint's generous donation from this creative and fun event at their grand openings. Our food bank thanks OnPoint for making this possible and we offer congratulations on the branch openings," Socolofsky said.

She said in the month of May alone, 1,049 new households were served by NW Harvest South.

"We are pleased to present a donation to such a worthy cause," said OnPoint's President/CEO Rob Stuart. "We understand that NW Harvest South operates very efficiently and that our check will be put to good use for households in need in the Vancouver area."

The three new branches, all located within area Safeway stores, are the first to open since OnPoint announced its charter expansion into Washington State in the fall of 2007. With these additions, OnPoint now has 14 branches and will open a new branch in Wilsonville, Ore., in August.

OnPoint Community Credit Union is the largest credit union in Oregon, serving more than 186,000 members and with assets of $2.6 billion.
