How much do I need for a down payment?

« Back to Member Assistance

It varies by loan type:

  • Conventional loans: Often require 3%–20% down. Putting 20% down lets you avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI).
  • FHA loans: Require as little as 3.0% down.
  • VA and USDA loans: Can offer 0% down if you qualify

The right amount for you depends on your savings, credit score, and comfort level with monthly payments. Some buyers put less down to keep cash available for moving costs, repairs, or an emergency fund.
