Nearly 50% of Portland Public School students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch assistance during the school year. And while this week is the end of the school year and the start of a much-anticipated summer vacation, it also means that thousands of local kids who receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch at their school during the school year find themselves without two of their three meals a day during the summer months.
To help bridge the gap, the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division is providing food boxes to families of three Portland-area elementary schools with children who face food insecurity at home through their summer food box program, which is in its third year. OnPoint proudly supports Sunshine Division and had a great time helping pack 1,000 food boxes for these local children along with volunteers from Advantis Credit Union and BedMart.
