Article originally published October 24, 2019:
“When you get admitted, it’s really hard to stay away from your family, so the best advice I can say is to always look up and try and never look down.” When we hear advice like this from an 11-year-old, we have to marvel.
Those are the words of McKenna from Eugene, Ore., who’s been fighting an aggressive form of brain cancer since age two. She and her family have traveled to OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital more than 60 times for 16 surgeries and 35 rounds of radiation. It’s families like hers that need support, which is why we’re making it easy for OnPoint members to help.
This October and November, our members can support OHSU Doernbecher by participating in our Refer a Friend campaign. For each referred person who joins during the campaign, we’ll give our member an extra $50, their friend $50, and make a $50 donation to OHSU Doernbecher. Members can invite friends, family members and business associates to become new OnPoint members.
Donations will support a variety of OHSU Doernbecher services, including the new Gary and Christine Rood Family Pavilion. At this pavilion, families can receive free housing for when they need to travel to the hospital for their child’s specialized care. In 2018 alone, OHSU Doernbecher saw more than 70,000 patients from every county in Oregon and SW Washington for a total of more than 289,000 visits. About 40 percent of those patients come from outside the immediate area.
“When a child is ill, the thing they need more than anything else is family support; that means being there,” said Dana Braner, Physician-in-Chief, OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. “We’ve built a place where families can regroup and recharge their batteries and be ready the next day to support their child all over again.”
In addition to the Rood Family Pavilion, donations to OHSU Doernbecher support:
- Breakthrough pediatric research, including new cancer treatments, infectious disease cures, and prevention and treatment of ADHD, autism and other brain disorders
- Programs to improve health outcomes for kids whose medical needs are compounded by social problems like poverty
- Support for comprehensive care for children facing long-term, life-threatening conditions
- Improved outcomes for kids with cancer by offering the latest treatments through clinical trials
- Specialized pediatric care available nowhere else in the region
